Department Vision:

 At Blessed William Howard we believe that history enables students to develop a sense of place in the world. By understanding what has happened in the past, we better understand the present. We aim to develop our historians into people that will think critically, be empathetic and want to shape the world around them.

Curriculum 

History in Year 7

Students will study a range of topics that will build their historical knowledge and allow them a broad overview of the world we live in.

 During this year pupils will:

  • Build up a foundation of historical knowledge.
  • Develop their skills as growing historians.
  • Explore historical debates.

Topics will include:

  • Historical Skills
  • The Battle of Hastings and how William controlled England.
  • The Crusades: Why do we get it wrong?
  • Slavery and the growth of racism.

History in Year 8 

Year 8 allows students to build on their experience and develop their skills,

During this year pupils will:

  • Explore historical debates of key events and people.
  • Hone their skills as KS3 historians.
  • Build upon existing knowledge and make links between different areas of study.

Topics will include:

  • The Industrial Revolution.
  • The Titanic: did social class determine survival?
  • The First World War: A Just War?
  • The Second World War.
  • Genocide
