Curriculum Overview

In Year 7 students practise their geographical skills through the Introduction to Geography unit. A range of maps, places and locations are studied throughout Year 7. In the unit of work on population and settlement, students' study traditional land use zones of the UK, how these zones are changing and the impacts of an increasing global population. Physical Geography units are also introduced covering the landscapes of rivers and coasts. There are out of classroom learning opportunities including fieldwork investigations measuring infiltration rates around the school grounds.

In Year 8 students develop their understanding of the wider world. They are encouraged to both physical geography processes, describing and explaining how landforms are formed and question the environmental impact of human activity. The units covered are; Tropical Rainforests, Tectonics, Glaciation, Contrasting Landscapes to the UK, Asia.

In the Autumn Term of Year 9 the unit s covered develop a secure knowledge of Climate Change, Globalisation and Geographical Skills. These concepts are then used throughout the up coming GCSE course. A module called Urban Issues and challenges is studied where students are required to study population growth, the impacts of urbanisation and have an in depth understanding of a major UK city and a city in LIC or NEE.

The Autumn Term begins with the Living World module, focusing on both the tropical rainforest and hot desert ecosystem. In the Spring Term students are focussed on Changing Economic World, as study of global inequality. In addition there is also a focus on how the uK economy is changing, how our places of work have and will change. In the summer term students study UK landscapes of rivers.

In the final year of GCSE study, the curriculum covers The Challenge of Natural Hazards (tectonics, tropical storms and climate change). Student complete two fieldwork investigations and prepare for their  Geographical Applications paper.
